In 21st century style, Tim Kazules followed a passion, created a Kickstarter campaign to help create it and built a business plan with investors and friends who shared his vision.

The result is the new Five Threads Brewing Company in Westlake Village.

Kazules, who became a home brewer and then full-time craft-beer brewer after a career in the biotech industry, says Five Threads is the result of a handcrafted dream. “I was in Colorado on business and my boss and I played hooky from the conference we were attending and went to The Great Divide [a Denver brewery],” Kazules says. “I was looking at the brewing equipment and the bar and that was it—I’m in heaven. The sky opened up, light shined down, angels sang. I wanted to own a brewery.”

Once home, he started reading and listening to the home-brewing podcasts Brew Strong and The Jamil Show. “I drank a lot of Dogfish Head beer [from Delaware] and started home brewing, learning techniques and styles and making beer,” he says.

With his partners Neil Shirley, who built all the furniture for the tasting room from reclaimed wood, and Michael and Evelyn Pryor, Kazules makes Five Threads’ beers from his own recipes.

His flagship Pantry Porter is dark and roasty and short-term plans call for serving it with five different ingredients brewed into it, including chocolate, coffee, vanilla beans, chilies and dried oak, allowing patrons to do their own blending.

In the long term, Kazules has the right of refusal on neighboring spaces for expansion and he looks to add local distribution including restaurants.

Be sure to ask him the story of the five threads while you sip a true local, handcrafted beer.
